Bheemeshwari Wildlife Sanctuary

Bheemeshwari Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Mandya district of Karnataka in India. The sanctuary is situated amidst the beautiful falls of Barachukki, Mekedatu and Gaganachukki.

Bheemeshwari Wildlife Sanctuary is a renowned picnic spot and is a natural habitat of the famous Mahseer fish. The sanctuary offers a number of exciting and responsible angling options to visitors. The other wildlife found includes monkeys, crocodiles, leopards, deer, wild boars, jackals and otters. Avian species like the cormorant, ibis, kingfisher and heron are also spotted.

The nearest airport is Bangalore, 120 km (kilometers) away. Mandya at a distance of 60 km is the nearest railhead.

December to March is the best time period to visit the place. Bird spotting, trekking and angling are the favored activities.

Illegal angling and habitat depletion has led to a fall in Mahseer population. This has led to a number of actions being taken to protect the species. The Karnataka State Forest Department has proposed a ban on Mahseer angling to the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests in this regard.
