Bheemeshwari Wildlife
Sanctuary is located near Mandya district of Karnataka in
India. The sanctuary is situated amidst the beautiful falls of
Barachukki, Mekedatu and Gaganachukki.
Bheemeshwari Wildlife Sanctuary is a
renowned picnic spot and is a natural habitat of the famous Mahseer
fish. The sanctuary offers a number of exciting and responsible angling
options to visitors. The other wildlife found includes monkeys,
crocodiles, leopards, deer, wild boars, jackals and otters. Avian
species like the cormorant, ibis, kingfisher and heron are also spotted.
The nearest airport is Bangalore, 120
km (kilometers) away. Mandya at a distance of 60 km is the nearest
railhead.
December to March is the best time
period to visit the place. Bird spotting, trekking and angling are the
favored activities.
Illegal angling and habitat depletion
has led to a fall in Mahseer population. This has led to a number of
actions being taken to protect the species. The Karnataka State Forest
Department has proposed a ban on Mahseer angling to the Indian Ministry
of Environment and Forests in this regard.
